A very large retail park in excess of 500,000sqft for Stadium Developments. The buildings are of relatively standard portal frame construction but ground conditions on this former steelworks were most unusual.

Massive layers of fused slag tipped from the steelworks were present below shallow ground water. Tests showed that the slag was capable of excessive chemical expansion and had therefore to be excavated below the building footprint. The excavation below the water table by dragline was infilled with single size stone and completed with selected fill placed and compacted in layers allowing shallow pad and continuous strip foundations for the building.

MJM were involved in a rolling programme of refurbishment and extensions on this park. This project is typical of other large retail parks undertaken for Stadium at Team Valley, Gateshead and Meadowhall, Sheffield.
