A large modern food store and factory outlet retail units on a site had an extensive and varied industrial history including canning factories and various shipbuilding and repair facilities. The foodstore and service yard were fully piled with a suspended ground floor slab. The factory outlet units were treated by vibro compaction allowing shallow pad and strip foundations and a ground bearing slab.
Extensive probing for unexploded World War II bombs was required before relict foundations and buried slipways could be broken out and piling commence.
The site was partially reclaimed from the inner estuary of the Oulton Broad/Lake Lothing and required extensive civils works including full sheet piling around the marine boundaries and an access road bridge over existing surface water outfalls.
