Environment Building, University of York

Client: Morgan Sindall
Services Provided: Civil & Structural

A 4 storey steel framed structure for the University of York. This project was won through competitive D&B tender with Morgan Sindall. The client’s tender drawings indicated a fully piled structure with green roof, roof top plant and several different cladding systems. During the tender process, careful consideration of the ground conditions enabled us to omit the piling and utilise a much more cost effective ground improvement technique with shallow reinforced pads and ground bearing floor slab. The steelwork tonnage shown on the tender drawings was reduced by more than 20%, the cladding options streamlined and a below ground surface water storage tank was omitted in favour of a surface attenuation pond. The latter delivers cost savings as well as introducing a more ecological and diverse SUDS technique that better suits the final use of the building.
